Understanding German humour
EN: The opinion that the Germans lacking sense of humour is widespread. The Guardian analyses this in a recent article [1] and come to the conclusion that this impression is wrong. The reason why German have a humour which is hard to understand by English speaking people seems to be mainly a linguistic one. German with its more rigid structure of sentences and compound words gives less possibilities for joke based on ambiguity, one of the most important element in the British humour. "The German language provides fully functional clarity". A cultural difference make smutty jokes harder: "The Germans did not find the human body smutty or funny, due to all attending mixed saunas from an early age." So, but what humour are the German using then? Regarding to the article mainly "blunt, seemingly serious statements, which became funny simply because of their context".
It's an interesting analysis. I am working in a very international environment and will try to find evidence for the presented theories.

DE: Kurz nachdem ich mein vorheriges Posting rausgeschickt habe ist mir eingefallen, dass ich einer Werbung nachgehen wollte, die ich kürzlich gelesen habe. IBM wirbt mit einer neuen Technik, die den Autoversicherungsmarkt revolutionieren kann (Werbungsblaba), für ihre Inovationskraft.
Ich habe mit ein paar Stichworten ("IBM GPS Versicherung") gegoogelt und tadaaa ... fand eine Pressemeldung [1] von IBM. Im Prinzip geht es darum die Versicherungzahlung an das tatsächliche Fahrverhalten des Versicherten anzupassen, was an sich löblich und sinnvoll ist. Für eine solche Kalkulation muss aber genau bekannt sein, wo sich das Auto zu welchen Zeitpunkt befindet. Also wird das Fahrzeug mit einer kleine Box inklusive GPS-Empfänger und GSM-Sender ausgerüsted. Dieses System bietet reichlich andere Vorteile wie leichteres Auffindens des Auto im Falle eines Diebstahl und die Möglichkeit Notrufe abzusetzen. Allerdings empfindes ich das Aufzeichnen solcher Daten als enormen Einschnitt in die Privatspähre. Und es stellen sich einige Fragen: Was wird genau übertragen? Wie ist die Verbindung gesichert? Wie lange werden solche Daten gespeichert? Wer hat darauf Zugriff?
Und das alles ist keine Zukunftsmusik: In Großbritannien gibt es schon diese "Pay As You Drive" Versicherungen.

DE: Deutschlandradio strahlte kürzlich eine recht unkritische Sendung [1] aus, die sich mit Überwachungstechniken der Kanäle Venedigs beschäftigt. Das Verkersaufkommen und Regelverstöße seien in den Kanälen von Venedig ein großes Problem. Mit "Funk-Etiketten" (ich denke mal RFID-Chips sind gemeint) und Nutzung von Spionagesatelliten will man der Sache Herr werden. Für mich klingt das alles sehr "orwellschisch" und es ist fraglich, ob eine solche Totalüberwachung nötig sind. Der letzte Satz, "[e]in System, das für Städte auf dem Land Vorbildcharakter haben könnte", ist erschrenckend.

LyricWiki - The wiki for song lyrics
EN: LyrikWiki is a huge and add-free source for song lyrics. Using MediaWiki (the same wiki engine used for Wikipedia) it offers everybody the opportunity to improve the pool of lyrics. The most active user seems to be Überbot so far, a program that inserts page scrapings into the wiki. Hopefully copyright issues will not bring trouble in the future. Give it try!
